About Bolgatanga Market

Bolgatanga Market is the large central market of Bolgatanga, the capital of the Bolgatanga Municipal District and of the Upper East Region of Ghana. It is the town's principal trading ground and, in the description given by Wikivoyage, the anchor of a town widely characterised as the crafts centre of northern Ghana.

The market's identity is closely tied to craft. Bolgatanga and its surrounding villages are described as the largest producers of leather works, straw baskets and smocks in the country, and artists sell their work at the market. The so-called "Bolga hats" are made and sold here, alongside woven baskets, cloth, jewellery and souvenirs. Wikivoyage notes that the town has two main markets, the Old Market and the New Market, near Bolgatanga Bawku Road, where goods range from foodstuffs to wristlets to smocks, a traditionally northern-Ghanaian garment. A separate craft market sells baskets, cloth, jewellery and souvenirs.

The market operates on a cycle rather than as a daily fixture. It is held every three days, when sellers come in from across the region and locals buy and sell vegetables, grains, animals, cloth and other everyday needs. A 2026 report describes the Bolgatanga Central Market as the economic backbone of the Upper East Region, with those three-day market days drawing diesel trucks, motorcycles and tricycles to offload goods before crowds of traders, head porters and consumers.

For setting, the markets are listed near Bolgatanga Bawku Road, at approximately 10.786219, -0.847952 — feature coordinates rather than a confirmed visitor entrance. Bolgatanga lies about 161 km north of Tamale.

Practically, Wikivoyage lists the markets as open 6AM–10PM, with the market day itself falling every three days; exact daily trading hours are not confirmed by an official operator source. Taxis can be found close to the market and the bus loop along the Bolga–Tamale road. No official listing of toilets, parking or other facilities was found.
