Why visit
About Peki Market
Peki Market is one of the three main markets in the South Dayi District of Ghana's Volta Region, alongside Kpeve and Dzemeni. It is a periodic market, held every five days rather than trading daily, so the days it operates are the days it is worth planning around. The district assembly refers to it as the Gbi or Peki Market, and market tolls are a meaningful part of the assembly's internally generated revenue.
The market sits within Peki, a traditional area and settlement cluster made up of Peki-Avetile, Peki-Dzake, Peki-Blengo, Peki-Tsame and Peki-Wudome. Peki is one of four traditional areas in the district — with Kpalime, Tongor and Kpeve — whose people speak Ewe. The district's economy is predominantly agricultural, and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture notes that agriculture "forms the basis for successful operation of the thriving markets in the district."
That agricultural base shapes what the market is. Maize is grown especially around Peki, and cassava production is centred on Peki and Sanga. Three agro-chemical stores operate at Peki, and individuals also sell agro-chemicals on market days. Visitors should expect a working produce and farm-input market serving the surrounding farming communities rather than a purpose-built tourist attraction.
Practical expectations are limited by what is documented. MoFA states there are no warehouses in the district markets, so safe-keeping, storage and preservation cannot be guaranteed, and no toilets or baths are attached to the markets; there are also no abattoirs. No specific clock hours are published for Peki Market, only the five-day cycle.
Access is by road. The district's main road runs about 80 km from Asikuma through Peki to Kpeve, and the Eastern Corridor highway traverses from Hohoe through Kpeve and Peki to link the main Accra–Ho road at Asikuma. Kpeve is the district capital. Peki is also noted for tourism potential, including the Peki Dzake Slave Cave and a craft village and refuge cave at Peki.
