About Martyrs of Uganda Parish Church, Sirigu
Martyrs of Uganda Parish is a Roman Catholic parish church at Sirigu, in the Kasena Nankana West District of Ghana's Upper East Region. It belongs to the Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga and is listed under the Navrongo Deanery. The parish is also referred to as the Martyrs of Uganda Catholic Mission or Parish, Sirigu.
The church is notable for its walls, which local women decorated with traditional mural designs. The work follows the same Nankana and Kassena technique used on the decorated compounds for which Sirigu is known. Academic field study of Sirigu's mural arts records that local women have decorated the walls of the Catholic churches at both Sirigu and Navrongo with traditional designs. Monsignor Kizito Avereyire, who served at Sirigu before his later association with the decoration of Navrongo Cathedral, saw women decorating compounds and the church there, and Sirigu women were subsequently invited to Navrongo to apply the same art.
The parish is also noted for hymn singing in Gurune, including at midnight Mass. It remains a working parish church used for Mass and major feasts, so visitors should expect an active place of worship rather than a managed visitor attraction.
Sirigu is a rural Kassena-Nankana community roughly 30 km from Bolgatanga, in semi-arid Guinea savannah. The wider area is known for traditional mural-decorated architecture and pottery, and also has the SWOPA craft gallery and a guesthouse.
Practical information is limited. No published opening hours, entrance fee, accessibility details or visitor amenities were found. The diocese's parish listing gives a postal address of C/o Box 4, Navrongo, with telephone numbers 024-4227697 and 020-8387237, and an assistant's number 024-4420947. That page appears dated, so current post-holders and numbers are unverified.
