Why visit
About Sirigu Traditional Arts Centre
Sirigu Traditional Arts Centre is the visitor hub for the community-based ecotourism project in Sirigu, a village in the Kasena Nankana West District of Ghana's Upper East Region. The village sits close to the Burkina Faso border and has long been known for pottery, basket weaving, distinctive architecture and decorative wall paintings.
The centre is tied to SWOPA, the Sirigu Women's Organisation for Pottery and Art. According to Visit Ghana, the Ghana Tourism Authority's platform, seven women from Sirigu founded the organisation after many young women left the village in search of work. SWOPA began by training local women in traditional crafts and marketing what they made, and Visit Ghana reports it has since grown to more than 350 women. Wikipedia records the organisation as established by Melanie Kasise in 1997, beginning with 54 women and expanding to 345 active women working in basketry, weaving, pottery and other crafts, and describes it as self-funded. The two accounts differ on the founding year, the founding group and the current membership figure; those details remain disputed.
For visitors, the practical draw is the craft itself. The centre operates a visitor centre, gallery, workshop and guesthouse complex where functional pottery and baskets can be seen and bought. A community guesthouse was built in the same style as the surrounding compounds, so the architecture and symbolic wall decoration that define Sirigu are part of the stay rather than a separate sight.
Jolinaiko Eco Tours lists the centre among the official Community-Based Eco Tourism Projects established jointly by the Nature Conservation Research Centre, the Ghana Tourist Board, SNV Netherlands Development Organization and Peace Corps Ghana, which places it within a wider network of community-run tourism sites in Ghana.
Planning details are limited in the available sources. Opening hours, entry fees, guided tour arrangements, workshop schedules and booking procedures for the guesthouse are not confirmed here, and should be checked directly before travelling. Sirigu lies in the far north-east of the Upper East Region, near the Burkina Faso border, so the centre is best treated as part of a wider northern Ghana itinerary rather than a short detour.
