Explore Ghana
Abono is the main shoreline settlement on Lake Bosomtwe, Ghana's only true inland natural lake, sitting in a million-year-old meteorite crater about 30 km south-east of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region. Almost everything worth doing here circles that water, so Abono makes an easy, rewarding stop for travellers based in or passing through Kumasi.
The places share a single setting and a strong community feel. The Lake Bosomtwe Information Centre at Abono is the natural first stop, explaining the crater and the lake before you set out. From the same shoreline you can take a boat trip in a traditional flat wooden padua rather than a dugout canoe, and the Crater Rim Trail leads you up through forest for views back down over the water. Further along the banks, the Grand Eco Cabana Canopy Walkway lifts you into the trees for lake and forest views.
They differ mainly in pace and effort. The information centre and boat trips are gentle and shoreline-based; the rim trail is a proper hike; the canopy walkway is a short, elevated experience at a resort. Together they cover nature, wildlife and forest reserve interest, heritage and cultural sites, community tourism, hiking and simple recreation.
Good to know
Plan Abono as a day out from Kumasi, roughly 30 km to the north-west, and allow time to move slowly between the shoreline, the trail and the walkway. Distances between the listed places are short but local transport and walking are the usual ways to get around, so build in slack. Before you go, check current conditions with the Lake Bosomtwe Information Centre at Abono: boat trips, trail access and the canopy walkway can all be affected by weather, water levels or maintenance. Wear shoes suitable for forest paths, carry water and sun protection, and remember this is a living community around a sacred lake, so ask before photographing people and follow local guidance.
