About Koforidua Central Market
Koforidua Central Market is the leading trading centre in the New Juaben South Municipality and one of the larger markets in Ghana's Eastern Region. It sits in the heart of Koforidua, the regional capital, in the Central Market area of town near Jackson Park, the old colonial-era park in the middle of the city. Koforidua itself lies roughly two hours by road from Accra and serves as the commercial centre of the Eastern Region.
The market is sprawling and loud, and traders sell a wide range of goods: foodstuffs, cloth and materials, cosmetics, secondhand clothing known locally as obroni wawu, and kente offcuts. Most traders work from sheds within the market place, alongside street hawkers who display items on tables or in pans carried on their heads. Goods here are described as relatively expensive compared with the satellite Agartha market nearby.
Koforidua's designated market days are Mondays and Thursdays, when the municipality fills with people arriving from surrounding areas and trading activity peaks. Foodstuffs are reported to arrive from the hinterlands as early as 5.30 a.m. on market days. No official opening hours are published, and a travel guide suggests visiting early, around 7–9am, to see the market at its busiest before the midday heat, allowing one to two hours to wander.
The market was built decades ago and, as of August 2021 reporting, was slated for reconstruction to expand capacity, decongest the area, and improve safety and access. Planned facilities included a clinic, fire station, bank, washrooms and restrooms, funded by government through the District Assembly Common Fund as one of the Municipal Chief Executive's three "legacy projects", alongside redevelopment of Koforidua Jackson Park and the Nsukwao drainage system. The plans followed a fire at the adjacent Juaben Serwa Market, which the Ghana National Fire Service struggled to access. No entry fee is reported; current on-site amenities and the status of the reconstruction are not verified.
