About Centre for National Culture, Eastern Region

The Centre for National Culture, Eastern Region, is the regional office of Ghana's National Commission on Culture, operating under the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts. It is based in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital, and describes its mission as promoting regional culture, unearthing talent, and preserving arts and culture through research, festivals, theatre, seminars and exhibitions. The Centre also supervises thirteen municipal and district offices across the Eastern Region.

For a visitor, the Centre functions as a cultural site, craft centre and museum in one. Its One Stop Craftshop retails regional and national artifacts, including beads, textiles, smocks, batik, tie and dye, canvas paintings, Asipim carvings, kente stoles, cane baskets, linen shirts, jewellery, lamp shades and wall hangings. The Centre's Traditional School offers training to individuals, groups and institutions, Ghanaian and foreign, in traditional cloth-wearing, basic traditional dances, drumming, music lessons for children, and the meanings of Adinkra symbols and proverbs.

The Centre's performance theatre is a reported 1,500-seat auditorium. It was renovated under a public-private partnership and commissioned for use in January 2019, with the renovation intended to help revive the arts in the regions by addressing a shortage of cultural infrastructure for drama, musical concerts, rehearsals, studios and exhibition halls. The wider project in Koforidua was initiated in 1964 by Kwame Nkrumah.

The Centre sits on the Koforidua-Adweso-Mamfe road at Galloway Junction, sharing boundaries with Jubilee Park, the Beads Market and Ghateco Junior High School. Its postal address is P.O. Box KF491, Koforidua; the listed telephone number is 0362-194033 and the email is [email protected].

Opening hours, admission fees, tour arrangements and current programme schedules are not established by the available sources, so visitors should confirm these directly with the Centre before planning a visit.
