About Kintampo Waterfalls

Kintampo Waterfalls is a waterfall on the Pumpum River, a tributary of the Black Volta, about 4 km (2.5 mi) north of Kintampo municipality in the Kintampo North Municipal area of the Bono East Region. It sits on the Kumasi–Tamale road, just after the Falls Rest Stop on the right side when travelling north, which makes it a natural break on the long drive between Kumasi and Tamale or Mole National Park.

The falls form three main drops, the longest measuring 25 m (82 ft); counting the steps and cascades between them, the river falls roughly 70 m (230 ft) in total. The water is said to originate at Pumpumatifi village, about 10 km away. The site is set in forest with tall mahogany trees, and the first stage is backed by a cave that houses a colony of bats, with the water disappearing under rocks and reappearing about 20 m downstream. A canopy walkway crosses the river overlooking the falls, and Nkrumah Rock is said to be a spot where Kwame Nkrumah sat to read and meditate. In Kintampo town itself, a monument marks Ghana's geographic centre.

Facilities listed for the site include a car park, a reception centre, trained guides, staircases to the falls, the canopy walkway, shaded picnic areas among the mahogany trees, and a field used for football and volleyball. The first two stages are reached easily because the way is levelled. The third stage requires descending about 173 stairs and climbing 151–153 stairs back up, and rock surfaces can be slippery. Swimming or bathing is not permitted at stages 1 and 2; it is permitted at the base of stage 3.
