About Dixcove Harbour

Dixcove Harbour is the natural harbour of Dixcove, a coastal village and fishing community in the Ahanta West District of Ghana's Western Region, roughly 35 km west of the regional capital Sekondi-Takoradi. The harbour lies on the shores of a rocky cove. Its quiet waters suit small boats and canoes, while large ships anchor about 2 km offshore.

This is a working artisanal fishing port rather than a formal ticketed attraction. A canoe basin and a fish landing beach operate here, and the Western Regional Co-ordinating Council describes Dixcove as a colourful and animated fishing town with a natural harbour big enough for small ships. The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority describes the canoe basin as a traditional fish landing beach and a toll-free area managed by GPHA, where Chief Fishermen control day-to-day activities; it caters for artisanal fishermen whose operations peak from June to September, with herrings as the main catch.

Fort Metal Cross, an English-built fort completed in 1698, stands on a bluff on the eastern side of the village and dominates the fishing village and town. The town was a trade centre during the Gold Coast era and was divided into two quarters, Ntwarkro (Upper Dixcove) and Daazikessie (Lower Dixcove). The Western Regional Co-ordinating Council lists the harbour under the categories of boat experience, heritage site, history and recreation.

For a visitor, the harbour is best understood as a place to observe an active fishing community at work, with the fort above it providing the historical context. Access is reached via Agona Junction on the Takoradi–Tarkwa road, then by road signage to Dixcove. No published opening hours, entrance fee, contact details or accessibility information were found, so visitors should treat arrangements as unconfirmed and plan around the harbour's working schedule rather than a fixed visitor programme.
