Why visit
About Atorkor Slave Market
Atorkor Slave Market is a heritage site in Atorkor, a coastal village in the Anlo area of the Volta Region, Ghana. Atorkor formed part of the Upper Slave Coast, and its position on the Atlantic coast made it a port for the shipment of captives brought from the interior. The site is remembered as one of the larger slave markets in Ghana during the peak of the transatlantic slave trade, and it is described as comparable in importance to Salaga and Assin Manso.
The visible focus of a visit is the Atorkor Slave Trade Memorial, built in 1999 with funds from a group of Anlo citizens in America. It takes the form of a high-walled circular enclosure entered through a small wooden door, a deliberately narrow opening. Inside stands a life-size sculptural group: a tall European slave-trader raising a whip over two kneeling African figures chained at the neck.
The interior walls carry a narrative frieze illustrating a local legend about a white trader who lived in Atorkor and the young men and women of the village who were deceived and sold into slavery. The memorial stands at the Atorkor Vocational Technical Institute.
Documented history adds a harder detail to the setting. Captives were marched from their villages to the slave markets at Keta and Atorkor, and red-hot iron was used to burn a mark on their bodies. From these markets they were taken to Fort Prinzenstein at Keta for physical examination and branding.
Atorkor itself sits on the Atlantic coast, between the sea and the lagoon, roughly 28 kilometres from Keta. The wider Anloga District lies east of the Volta Estuary, about 160 kilometres east of Accra off the Accra–Aflao road. The site is a place of memory rather than a reconstructed market, so visitors should expect a monument and its enclosure rather than market structures. Opening hours, entry fees, guiding arrangements and accessibility are not established in the available sources and should be confirmed locally before travelling.
