About Anlo-Shama fishing community
Anlo-Shama, also reported as Anlo Beach or Anlo village, is a small coastal fishing and farming community in the Shama District of Ghana's Western Region. It sits at the estuary of the Pra River where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Guinea, on a narrow strip of land between the sea and a lagoon. Ghanaian media have described it as a popular tourist destination in the region, and the Shama District Assembly lists the Pra River estuary at Anlo Beach and Shama Apo among its undeveloped tourism potential.
For a visitor, the community's interest lies mainly in its setting and its working character. It is a fishing settlement whose residents also farm, and the district assembly cites the potential of beaches, the estuary and river transport to attract tourists. One report describes the beach as among the cleanest in the Western Region, with occasional hatching of sea turtles in the area. The district also lists Anlo Beach among locations with high potential for large-scale salt production.
That setting is also precarious. Coastal tidal wave erosion has severely affected the village. A 2017 Daily Graphic report recorded two deaths and more than 200 residential and commercial properties destroyed over five months, with hundreds displaced, habitable land reduced to under 150 metres between sea and lagoon, and loss of wells and electricity. In 2021 the Ghanaian Times reported residents appealing for a sea defence wall, with the Assembly Member saying his family had lived there about 100 years. Reported interventions discussed included resettlement to higher ground and land acquisition or compensation.
Access is described as either by canoe over the Pra River through Shama from the western side, or by road from the northern part. The Shama District lies about 15 km east of Sekondi-Takoradi and 265 km west of Accra, with the Accra-Takoradi trans-national highway passing through it.
No formal community-tourism operator, guided tour product, visitor facility, entrance fee, opening hours or contact is documented in the sources reviewed. Visitors should treat this as an unserviced community rather than a managed attraction, and should not expect tourism infrastructure.
