About Pra River Estuary (Pra Estuary), Shama

The Pra River Estuary is the point where the Pra River meets the Gulf of Guinea at Shama, in the Shama District of Ghana's Western Region. The Pra is the longest river system in south-western Ghana and carries the second-largest discharge of fresh water into the Gulf of Guinea in the country. It rises on the Kwahu Plateau near Mpraeso and runs roughly 240 km southward to its mouth at Shama.

The estuary itself is a broad, low-lying system of mangrove forest, salt marsh and swamp covering about 1,780.3 hectares of habitat. Three mangrove species dominate: Avicennia germinans, Laguncularia racemosa and Rhizophora mangle. At its entry into the sea the channel is roughly 100 m wide. The literature describes it as the second-largest estuary in Ghana.

For visitors, the estuary's interest is ecological and working rather than developed. Ecological assessments record nearly 30 fish species of marine, brackish and freshwater origin. The fishery directly supports about 10,000 people and indirectly more than 15,000 women and children, and is the subject of the 2020 Pra Estuary Community-Based Fisheries Management Plan, which targets the black-chin tilapia (Sarotherodon melanotheron). The Shama District Assembly lists the estuary at Anlo Beach and Shama Apo among the district's tourism sites, alongside Fort Sebastian and the White Cross, as places that need development for revenue generation and employment creation. The Assembly describes the River Pra estuary as an important tourism potential that remains undeveloped and could, with investment, become a major attraction.

That status shapes what a visitor can reasonably expect. There is no documented visitor infrastructure, entrance, fee, opening hours or guided experience in the available sources, so the estuary is best understood as a natural and fishing landscape rather than a managed site. Documented pressures include siltation and pollution from illegal alluvial gold mining upstream, illegal fishing, mangrove over-exploitation, coastal erosion and seasonal flooding.

The mapped coordinates (approximately 5.01913 N, 1.62598 W) mark the river mouth itself, not a visitor entrance; discovery literature cites a slightly different position near 5.02698 N, 1.625768 W. Practical access details are not established in the sources reviewed.
