About Agbozume Market

Agbozume Market is the main periodic market of Agbozume, also known as Klikor-Agbozume, a town in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region in southeastern Ghana. It is a municipal market held every four days, and it is best known for the sale of kente cloth. Traders from Burkina Faso, Togo, Benin and Nigeria come to buy cloth for export, while people from surrounding villages arrive on market days to trade other goods.

Weaving shapes the town around the market. Agbozume is described as home to the largest kente market in the region, selling to much of West Africa, and as a wholesale hub for Ewe kente cloth. Weaving is a way of life here: about 95 per cent of inhabitants are said to have looms in their homes, which they begin using at the age of four or five. The people of Agbozume and nearby Klikor are noted for kente production, and the town's economy also includes farming, fishing and salt mining.

Agbozume also hosts one of the west coast's most vibrant livestock markets, so a visit can involve more than cloth. The Ketu South Municipal Assembly has rehabilitated the Denu and Agbozume Markets, at a reported cost of ¢24,869 million.

The market is described by the Assembly Member for Agbozume South Electoral Area as one of the oldest and busiest in the municipality. The same account notes that it lacks proper drainage systems and pavements and has no gutters to channel water away, so it floods when it rains, leaving traders without a place to sell; at least ten houses around the main market were severely affected in flooding in July 2026. Visitors should expect conditions to vary with the weather.

Agbozume lies on the main Accra–Togo border road, about 20 km from the border town of Aflao and the Gulf of Guinea coast, adjacent to Klikor. The main language is Ewe. Agbozume is the traditional capital of the Somey Ewes, whose ancestors came originally from Keta. Market days are the busiest times; opening hours, stall fees and facilities are not documented in the available sources.
