About Nogokpo Shrine and Village
Nogokpo is a small village in the Ketu South Municipal of the Volta Region, set along the Trans-West African Coastal Highway, also described as the ECOWAS Tema-Aflao Highway. It is best known for its traditional and spiritual shrine, referred to as the Yewe Temple or Torgbui Zakadza Temple. Accounts of the village's founding describe Torgbui Saba Tritriku Agbo migrating from Agbozume Sukladzi and bringing the Zakadza deity, a Yewe thunder god, from Dahomey; his sister Minawo Ladzeshie is named as the first priestess. Other accounts trace the people's migration from Notse in Togo by way of Agbozume.
The name Nogokpo is rendered in Ewe as a question, roughly asking whether one will live here peacefully and free of crime. The original name is given as Dalakpanaku, meaning "you lie, you die." Visitors are described as coming to the site seeking spiritual justice, and sacrifices of goats, fowls, ducks and cows are described in connection with it.
The temple is described as a modern estate rather than an old structure, with shiny tiled floors and walls, separate units for different energies, and traditional music playing in the background. Photography inside is forbidden. The town itself is known for kente weaving and for farming cassava, coconut, maize and vegetables, and it has churches including St Jude Catholic Church.
Practical facilities are documented at town level: potable water and electricity, plus restaurants and hotels serving a growing number of visitors. Residents are described as offering to host visitors overnight with meals. No dedicated visitor centre, ticketing facility, published opening hours or entrance fee is documented, and the available coordinates are village feature coordinates rather than a verified visitor entrance to the temple. In 2023 the village drew wider attention after Archbishop Charles Agyinasare called Nogokpo the "demonic headquarters" of the Volta Region, prompting traditional leaders to issue a 14-day ultimatum.
