About Fort Kongenstein

Fort Kongenstein is a ruined Danish trading fort at Ada Foah in the Ada East District of the Greater Accra Region, Ghana. It was built in 1783 and stood on the seafront at the mouth of the Volta River, where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean. The fort was used in the transatlantic and sub-Saharan slave trade, and Ada people were shipped to the Americas through it. It was purchased by the English on 15 March 1850.

The site today is a ruin rather than a standing fort. A greater portion of the structure has been washed away by the sea, and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board states that "only traces of Fort Kongenstein may be found in Ada" and that "the fort has since disappeared into the sea." Coastal erosion has claimed much of the building, including a former prison. Sea defence wall construction has been proposed to slow that erosion.

For a visitor, the experience is therefore an archaeological and historical one. What remains includes remnants of stone walls and the crumbling outline of the building, set against views over the Volta River estuary. The wider Ada Foah area is known for its beaches, estuary islands and boat cruises, so the fort can be understood as one stop within a broader estuarine landscape rather than a self-contained attraction.

Practical planning is limited by what is published. No site-specific contact details, opening hours or entry fees are recorded; the managing authority is the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, whose listed office is at 2 Barnes Road, Adabraka, Accra, with telephone numbers +233-302 221633 and +233-302 221635. Visitors should treat the fort as an outdoor ruin exposed to coastal conditions and confirm access locally before travelling.
