Why visit
About Kulmasa Crocodile Pond
Kulmasa Crocodile Pond is a crocodile pond beside Kulmasa, a rural town in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of Ghana's Savannah Region. It appears on Visit Ghana's Savannah Region attractions list alongside Mole National Park, Larabanga Mosque, the Mystic Stone, Mognori Eco Village, Sonyo Eco-Village, the Gonja Traditional Cemetery at Mankuma, Daboya waterfall, the Salaga slave well and market, Makango Water Safari, the Ndewurajakpa Monument at Jamkuma, and the Yepei and Buipe ports.
The pond also appears in a Tree Crops Development Authority Environmental and Social Management Framework, which identifies it as one of two tourist sites (cultural resources) in the project area, the other being the Jentilpe Mass Grave. That document frames the site under several overlapping headings — cultural site, community tourism, nature, and wildlife reserve — which is a fair reflection of how it functions: a natural water body that carries cultural meaning for its community.
Kulmasa lies on the Wa–Kumasi highway, roughly 50 kilometres south of Wa. Published sources have placed the town in the Upper West Region, but that reflects pre-2019 boundaries; the Savannah Region was created that year out of the old Northern Region, and Kulmasa falls inside it. The town is also recorded as marking the southern frontier of the Kingdom of Wala in the 1890s.
Beyond this, the visitor experience is not established by the available evidence. Accounts describe a village pond without visitor infrastructure, and local media reporting in 2021 recorded residents saying the pond was declining and appealing for investment, while a guide in 2020 raised concern that the site has no formal protection or policing. No coordinates for the pond itself, opening hours, fees, facilities, or access arrangements are confirmed in the sources reviewed. Travellers should treat practical details as unverified and confirm locally before planning a visit.
