About Kpando Pottery Fesi Shed

Kpando Pottery Fesi Shed is a women's pottery cooperative and craft centre in Fesi, in the Kpando Municipal District of Ghana's Volta Region. It was founded in 1998 with 35 women as an adult education group for women living in communities across the Volta Region, and it continues to operate as a working pottery rather than a museum-style display.

The shed is notable for how its ceramics are made. Pots are hand-shaped without a potter's wheel, then burnished with stones and fired in four-sided brick kilns. After firing, the vessels are covered in sawdust to create a reduction environment that blackens the surface. The resulting work is characterised by surface relief, etched patterns and perforations, and the range includes pots, vases, water containers, platters, bowls, and turtle and elephant sculptures.

Among the Ewe people of Kpando, pottery is principally a women's art, and a stated goal of the cooperative is training younger women to carry the tradition forward as a main source of community income. That makes a visit less about a single object than about an ongoing craft economy.

Visitors can expect to observe women potters hand-building both traditional wares and abstract, sculptural forms, and the cooperative houses a gallery of sculptural and functional pots. The setting is Fesi, Kpando, reached by road through rainforest, savanna, along Lake Volta and rolling rocky hills.

Practical details are limited. No precise coordinates, opening hours, entry fees or booking arrangements are verified in the available sources, so travellers should confirm access and timing locally before setting out. Some sources also describe a related commercial venture, "Kpando Pottery," founded by Joseph Nii Noi Dowuona working with local women; its relationship to the Fesi shed is not confirmed.
