Why visit
About Fort Augustaborg
Fort Augustaborg, also known as Fort Teshie, is a former Danish fort in Teshie, in the Ledzokuku Municipal District of the Greater Accra Region. It stands roughly 15 km east of Fort Christiansborg. The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB), the site's custodian, describes it as the last of the Gold Coast forts to be built; it was constructed in 1787 and named for Princess Louise Augusta of Denmark.
The fort operated as a post in the Atlantic slave trade. Five years after it was built, Denmark became the first European nation to abolish the slave trade. On 17 August 1850, Fort Augustaborg was among five Danish forts purchased by Britain. After Ghana's independence in 1957 it passed to the new administration. It is listed among Ghana's coastal forts and castles inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and UNESCO's State of Conservation reporting places Augustaborg at Teshie among the protected monuments in GMMB custody that form part of that property. In Ga-Adangbe oral histories the site is remembered as "Dani Kpɔ" — Danish House.
Visitors should plan around a site that is documented rather than presented. GMMB states the fort "was never occupied" by the British and is "untraceable now", with only a cannon visible at the site. Photographs published in 2016 show ruins and a surviving wall. Ghana-Net notes the site is far less visited than Elmina or Cape Coast Castle. There is no visitor centre, ticketing or guided experience described in the available sources, so the fort is best understood as a heritage location in a residential coastal town rather than a developed attraction.
Practical information is limited. The coordinates recorded for the fort (approximately 5.583, -0.1) are feature coordinates from Wikipedia and Wikidata, corroborated by the List of castles in Ghana; they are not a verified entrance, and GMMB's statement that the site is untraceable means no exact entrance point is available. No site-specific telephone, email, opening hours or admission fees were found. Enquiries about the fort and about Ghana's coastal forts and castles generally can be directed to the GMMB head office at 2 Barnes Road, Adabraka, Accra (P.O. Box GP 3343, Accra), telephone +233-302 221633 / 221635, email [email protected], fax +233-302 222401.
