About Dontsin No.3 Company Posuban Shrine
The Dontsin No. 3 Company Posuban Shrine is an Asafo company shrine in Anomabu (also written Anomabo, and known locally as Obonoma), an old Fante coastal trading town in the Mfantsiman Municipal District of Ghana's Central Region. It is one of several posuban in the town, one associated with each of its Asafo companies.
A posuban is a shrine built by an Asafo company — the patrilineal military units of Akan and Fante society. Posubans are a form of elaborately decorated concrete structure found only in Ghana's central coastal region, and they are most easily seen in the oldest Fante trading towns, among them Elmina, Mankessim and Anomabu. The Dontsin No. 3 shrine is built of brick and cement.
The shrine has a documented modern history. It was outdoored in 1948 and later rebuilt in 1966. It is attributed to Kwamina Amoaku (1898–1987), a prolific artist born in Anomabo, who is credited with three posuban in the town for its asafo companies: Etsiwa No. 2 in about 1972–73, Dontsin No. 3 in 1948, and Akomfodzi No. 7 in 1977.
For a visitor, the interest lies in the form itself. Posubans are decorated with colourful sculptures, carvings and symbolic motifs that depict historical events, legendary figures and proverbs, so the structure reads as a public statement of a company's identity and memory. A caretaker may be able to explain the history for a contribution.
Practical details are limited. Most posuban shrines stand on main roads and viewing is free, with a donation of roughly US$1–3 expected for photographs. Posubans are typically built at the entrance to or in the middle of a town. Exact street-level coordinates for this shrine have not been established, so visitors should expect to locate it locally rather than by precise mapping.
