Anomabo sits on Ghana's Central Region coast, and its story is written in stone, concrete and memory. Three places here share a single thread: all of them speak to the town's long life as a trading port and a community with its own proud traditions. Fort William, begun in 1753, is a British trading fort that later served as a prison and is now in the custody of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board. Beside it lies the Memorial Garden of Return, also known as the Anomabo Heroes Centre, redeveloped for the Year of Return, Ghana 2019.

They differ in mood and maker. Fort William is colonial masonry and hard history. The Dontsin No.3 Company Posuban Shrine belongs to the Asafo, the traditional warrior companies: outdoored in 1948, rebuilt in 1966 and attributed to the artist Kwamina Amoaku, it is a living cultural site rather than a monument. The Memorial Garden is quieter and more reflective, a place to pause between the two.

Together they make a gentle half-day of walking, history and remembrance in one small coastal town.

Good to know

Before you go

Anomabo is easy to reach from the Central Region coast, and the three places sit close enough to visit on foot in one outing, so plan them as a single stop rather than separate trips. Wear comfortable shoes and carry water and sun protection, as much of the visiting is outdoors. The posuban shrine is a cultural and spiritual site, so dress modestly, ask before taking photographs and follow any guidance from those present. Before you travel, check current opening arrangements and any entry conditions with the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, since access to Fort William and the Memorial Garden can change. If you would like context, consider arranging a local guide in advance.
