About Amanzule Wetlands Nature Preserve

The Amanzule wetland lies near Beyin (also written Benyin) in the Jomoro Municipal District of Ghana's Western Region, roughly 360 km west of Accra. The Jomoro Municipal Assembly describes it as Ghana's largest intact swamp peat forest and the only forest in the country whose vegetation combines mangrove, raffia palm, coconut palm and swamp peat. The wetland is reported to support monkeys, crocodiles, marine turtles and birds, and the Amansuri Conservation Area has been selected as one of Ghana's Important Bird Areas on Birdlife International criteria.

Broader survey material places the Greater Amanzule Wetlands as a complex stretching from the Ankobra River estuary to the Ivory Coast border, across the coastal plains of the Jomoro and Ellembelle districts. That complex is described as peat, swamp and mangrove forest, flood plains and sandy shores, with streams, rivers and a freshwater lake. The Amansuri Conservation Area is associated with the Amansuri Conservation & Integrated Development Project, which manages the wetland and its freshwater lagoon within the Western Nzema Traditional Area.

For visitors, the wetland is reached through the Nzulezo stilt-village canoe tour, which departs from Beyin. The canoe ride takes about 45 minutes to an hour, passing narrow lush channels, open plains and the wide expanse of Amansuri Lake. Nzulezo itself sits on the blackish Amanzule River within the wetlands.

Practical planning is limited by what operators publish. The Nzulezo Stilt Village Tourism Project, which runs the tour that accesses the wetland, lists the phone number 0244606762 and the email [email protected]. No separate contact for the wetland preserve itself was found, and no verified coordinates, opening hours or fees are available, so visitors should confirm arrangements directly with the tour operator before travelling.
