Things to do in Beyin

Beyin sits in the Western Region, close to Ghana's border with Côte d'Ivoire, and it packs a surprising amount into one small coastal town. The places here share a single thread: water, history and the Nzema world that grew up around them. Fort Apollonia looks out over the sea, and inside its restored walls the Museum of Nzema Culture and History tells the story of the people and the wetland on its doorstep.

They differ in how you meet them. The Amansuri Wetland and the Amanzule Wetlands Nature Preserve are explored by canoe, gliding through black water towards the stilt village of Nzulezo, with Amanzule described as the country's largest intact swamp peat forest. Fort Apollonia and its museum are a walk-through experience, best taken slowly. Then, in the evening, the beach beside the Beyin visitor centre becomes a place of quiet waiting, as a conservation project protects nesting sea turtles and visitors join evening turtle tours.

Together they make Beyin a place for travellers who like their coast with a story attached, whether that story is carved in colonial stone, paddled through peat forest, or told by turtle tracks in the sand.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan Beyin as a full day or an overnight, because the fort, the museum and the canoe trips sit close together while the turtle tours happen after dark. Canoe tours to Nzulezo and the wetland run with local guides, so arrange them when you arrive or through your accommodation rather than assuming a fixed timetable. Bring cash, water, sun protection and insect repellent, and wear shoes you don't mind getting wet. Turtle nesting is seasonal and never guaranteed, so check with the visitor centre before building an evening around it. Confirm opening times for Fort Apollonia and the museum, and ask locally about road conditions before you travel.
