About Akwamu Gorge
Akwamu Gorge, also called the Akwamu Hills Community Forest, is an ungazetted community forest on the eastern side of the Volta River, between Atimpoku and Akwamufie in the Asuogyaman District of Ghana's Eastern Region. It is managed by the Akwamu Gorge Conservation Trust and owned jointly by royal families of the Akwamu Traditional Area, protected loosely through local traditional and cultural arrangements rather than formal gazettement.
The hill rises to roughly 400 m above sea level and forms the southern limit of the Akwapim-Togo Range where it meets the Akwapim Plateau within the Volta Gorge. From the top, the site offers panoramic views over the lower Volta River system, including the Adomi Bridge and river islands. The vegetation is sub-montane, mixing Dry Semi-deciduous and Southern Marginal forest types under a dense canopy dominated by Hymenostegia afzelii, with Antiaris toxicaria and Ceiba pentandra as common emergents.
For visitors interested in wildlife, the forest is notable. About 20 species of medium to large mammals have been recorded, including roughly five primates such as western pied colobus, olive colobus and Mona monkey, along with red river hog, duikers, royal antelope, pangolins and African golden cat. Around 150 bird species have been confirmed, among them the globally threatened white-necked picathartes, and the endangered endemic tree Talbotiella gentii also occurs here.
Access is on foot and guided. The trail begins with a steep incline through forest before levelling out with a few short climbs, and entry is through a locked gate opened by a guide. A 2023 visitor account describes the hike as suitable for anyone of average fitness, reaching the peak after about 40 minutes of climbing with roughly 178 m of elevation gain, and total hiking time of just over an hour, though the hike is estimated at around two hours. Guided hikes are arranged through tour operators. No wheelchair or step-free access information was found, and no on-site facilities such as a visitor centre, toilets, parking or signage were confirmed in official sources.
The Trust partners with the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD), Somanya, on education, research and environmental awareness, and the site is promoted for ecotourism, guided hiking and bird-watching. Contact details published by the Trust are phone [233-24] 4329659, email [email protected], website www.akwamugorge.org, and postal address Box 27 Akosombo, Ghana.
