Why visit
About Akwamufie Palace
Akwamufie Palace, also known as Bogyawe Palace, is the seat and official residence of the Akwamuhene of the Akwamu people. It stands at Akwamufie, on the bank of the Volta River in the Eastern Region of Ghana, near the Adomi Bridge that crosses the Volta. The palace is occupied by Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III, king of the Akwamu state, who has ruled from Bogyawe Palace since ascending the throne in 2011.
The palace houses a museum, referred to as the Bogyawe Museum or Akwamu Palace Museum, and is described as a traditional monument and a tourist attraction. Its artefacts include the key to Christiansborg Castle, also known as Osu Castle, which the Akwamu took in 1693. According to historians, Nana Asamani sold the castle back to the Danes for 12 kilograms of gold but kept the keys. The palace also holds the Akwamuhene's bullet-proof lion-skin war cloth, called "Mahony".
For a visitor, the interest lies in that combination: a working royal seat that is also a small museum of Akwamu history, with the Christiansborg key presented as one of its main attractions. A travel editorial account describes visiting the palace at river level near the Adomi Bridge crossing the Volta, and calls it the current throne of Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III.
Practical details are limited in the available sources. The palace is a residence and a seat of traditional authority as well as a museum, so access arrangements, opening hours, entry fees and guided-tour availability are not confirmed here and should be checked locally before travelling. The published coordinates are feature coordinates for the site rather than a confirmed visitor entrance, so they should be treated as an approximate location rather than a precise gate. Akwamufie lies in the Eastern Region along the Volta, in the vicinity of the Adomi Bridge.
