Winneba sits on the Central Region coast, and its story is told through places that are still very much alive. Fort Winneba, a Royal African Company fort built in 1694, stands as a reminder of the trade in enslaved people that once passed through this shore. Close by, the Effutu Community Sacred Forest has been kept by the Effutu for over 300 years as a communal sacred forest and customary hunting ground, while the Penkye Otu Shrine honours the principal deity of the Effutu people. Both are bound up with the annual Aboakyir festival, so a visit here is as much about living custom as it is about history.

The places differ in mood and purpose. The sacred forest and the shrine are quiet, respectful sites rooted in Effutu belief and festival life. Fort Winneba is a coastal landmark of stone and memory. Sir Charles Tourist Centre, on the western side of town, is a seaside resort associated with Sir Charles Beach and a colonial-era pool that fills at high tide. Further out at Pomadze Hills near Winneba Junction, the Pan African Heritage World Museum is an under-construction project planned to tell Africa's story in African voices.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan your days around the places you most want to see, and allow time to move between the coast and Winneba Junction, where the museum project sits at Pomadze Hills. The sacred forest and Penkye Otu Shrine are living cultural sites, so check locally before visiting and follow any guidance on dress and behaviour; access may be restricted around the Aboakyir festival. Fort Winneba and Sir Charles Tourist Centre are outdoor coastal stops, so bring water, sun protection and rain cover. As the Pan African Heritage World Museum is still under construction, confirm before you travel whether it is open to visitors. Ask locally about current conditions and any entry arrangements.
