About Penkye Otu Shrine
Penkye Otu — also written Penkyi Otu — is the principal deity of the Effutu people of Winneba, known locally as Simpa, in the Effutu Municipal District of Ghana's Central Region. The shrine associated with the deity is a living sacred site rather than a managed visitor attraction, and it sits at the heart of Effutu religious life.
Effutu tradition holds that the god Otu led the people on their migration from the ancient Western Sudan Empire, associated with Timbuktu, to their present coastal home. GhanaWeb records that the god was settled "at a place called Penkye hence the god became Penkyi Otu." The Ghana News Agency describes the annual Aboakyer festival as a commemoration of Penkyi Otu for leading the ancestors to their present settlement.
That festival, held on the first Saturday of May, is when the shrine's role is most visible. Akwaaba reports that libations and prayers are offered at Penkye Otu's shrine by the chiefs and priests, and that a sacred sacrifice for the captured deer takes place at the shrine the day after the hunt. Landtours describes the Omanhene, the Paramount Chief of the Effutu Traditional Area, Neenyi Ghartey VII, stepping three times on the captured live bushbuck, signifying its acceptance by the deity Penkyi Otu for the subsequent sacred rites.
For a visitor, the honest framing is that this is a place of worship and tradition, not a ticketed attraction. No official operator page, visitor entrance, ticket office or guided-tour listing was found, and no precise street address or verified coordinates could be confirmed; sources place the shrine only within the Winneba area. Practical planning should therefore be built around the Aboakyer festival period rather than around a standalone site visit, and any access to the shrine itself depends on the customary authorities who oversee it.
