About Fort Winneba

Fort Winneba is a historic fort on the coast at Winneba, in the Effutu Municipal District of Ghana's Central Region. It was built by the Royal African Company in 1694 on the Gold Coast, in what is now Ghana, and it was designed to facilitate the trade in enslaved people. That purpose, rather than any architectural flourish, is the reason the site carries weight: it is a physical trace of Ghana's involvement in the transatlantic slave trade, and it belongs to the same coastal network of European-built trading forts that shaped the region's history.

Much of what is documented about the fort comes from a survey made in 1727 by William Smith, who had been appointed to review the Company's African castles. Smith described Fort Winneba as standing on rising ground about fourteen yards from the seaside, approached by a handsome avenue of trees leading to the outer gate. He recorded a large spur used to secure cattle at night from wild beasts, and very good gardens. He also noted a tank supplying pure fresh water that appeared to be fed by a spring, and observed that the fort was of the same plan and dimensions as Fort Tantumquery.

For a visitor, the value of Fort Winneba lies in that documentary record as much as in the structure itself. Smith's account gives a concrete sense of how such a fort functioned as a working coastal station — water supply, livestock enclosure, cultivated ground, and a formal approach — rather than as a monument in isolation.
