Things to do in Paga

Paga sits right on Ghana's northern frontier with Burkina Faso, and the three places listed here show you the town from three very different angles. All of them are in Paga itself, in the Upper East Region, and all of them are about people and movement — trade, memory and everyday Kassena life. That shared thread is what makes a day here feel so grounded.

Pikworo Slave Camp at Paga Nania, about 3 km west of Paga, is the quietest and heaviest of the three. It was a slave-trade transit camp from 1704 to 1845, and its story is told through rock-cut features in the landscape rather than grand buildings. Paga Border Market is the opposite: a working cross-border market on the Ghana–Burkina Faso frontier, busy with informal trade every day. Paga Pia Palace, the chief's compound and seat of the Paga Pio, is a living Kassena extended-family compound with decorated mud walls — a home and a cultural site at once.

So you can move from a place of memory to a place of commerce to a place where people still live, all within the same small town.

Good to know

Before you go

Paga is in the Kassena Nankana West District of the Upper East Region, and the three places here are close enough to visit in one day. Pikworo Slave Camp lies at Paga Nania, roughly 3 km west of Paga, so plan transport for that short run out of town. The border market is a daily working market, not a staged attraction, so go with patience and expect informal trade rather than fixed stalls. Paga Pia Palace is a living family compound and the seat of the Paga Pio, so dress modestly, ask before photographing, and check locally whether visitors are being received on the day you plan to come. Confirm current access and any local guidance before setting out, and carry water and sun protection for the walk around Pikworo.
