About Paga Pia Palace

Paga Pia Palace, also known as the Paga Chief's Palace, is the chief's compound in Paga and the seat of the Paga Pio, the Paramount Chief of the Kassena-Nankana Traditional Area. It sits in Paga, the district capital of the Kassena Nankana West District in Ghana's Upper East Region, a border town on the country's northern frontier with Burkina Faso.

The palace is presented as a touristic primer to the housing style of the Kassena people, a group of roughly 160,000 living along the Ghana–Burkina Faso border. It is described as a living extended-family compound rather than a museum, so visitors should expect a working residential and traditional setting rather than an exhibition space.

Its notable features include decorated mud walls in Kassena style, a burial pit within the compound, and low crawl-through entrances to old sleeping quarters described as a defensive measure against slavers. Classic clay buildings stand alongside more modern structures. A travel account describes a guide meeting visitors at the gate and leading them into a labyrinthine complex of mud-walled quarters decorated with geometric patterns, connected by paths, with flat roofs used for drying grain and sleeping outdoors.

Visit Ghana calls a guided tour of the chief's compound "a particularly fascinating experience" and urges visitors to arrange a tour of the compound with its maze-like architecture. Visits are informal, arranged through a guide or by asking politely at the palace grounds. Mornings are considered best, and 20 to 30 minutes is a reasonable allowance.

Paga lies on the Burkina Faso border, 166 km south of Ouagadougou via the N5 highway. Published coordinates for Paga town are 10°59′32″N 01°06′48″W; a travel blog lists 10.9673° N, 1.0997° W for the palace. No verified visitor-entrance coordinate, opening hours, or admission fee was found, so confirm arrangements locally before travelling.
