Explore Ghana
Larabanga is a small town in Ghana's Savannah Region with an outsized pull on travellers. Its best-known landmark, the Larabanga Mosque, is a Sudano-Sahelian adobe building that Ghana's tourism authority describes as thought to be the oldest mosque in Ghana and West Africa. A short way from it, the Larabanga Mystic Stone is a sacred rock formation conserved and guided as a community tourist site.
What these places share is that they are rooted in community and in the savannah landscape around Mole National Park. Mognori Eco Village, a community-run village on the park's edge, offers guided village tours, canoe safaris and cultural performances, while Mole Museum, a two-room museum inside the park's Information Centre, explains the biodiversity and ecology of the area in its main exposition room and multimedia room.
They differ in scale and in mood. Mole National Park is the big one: Ghana's first and largest national park, about 4,577 km² of Guinea savannah managed by the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission. The mosque, the stone and the eco-village are intimate, guided and human in scale.
Good to know
Plan Larabanga and Mole as one trip, since the mosque, the Mystic Stone, Mognori Eco Village, Mole Museum and the national park all sit close together in the Savannah Region. Expect hot, dry savannah conditions and pack accordingly. Several of these sites are community-run and guided, so arrange visits locally and travel with a guide where one is offered. Before you set out, check current opening arrangements and any entry requirements with the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission for the park and museum, and with the community for the mosque, stone and eco-village. Dress respectfully at the mosque and the sacred stone.
