Caves in Bono East Region

The caves of Bono East reward travellers who are happy to walk a little further for a story. Three sites stand out. Buoyem Caves and Bat Colony, about 10 km north of Techiman, is a sacred grove and cave reached by a hilly, scrambling hike, and it shelters a large colony of Egyptian fruit bats. Kunsu Slave Cave, in Kunsu in the Kintampo North Municipality, is a cave and heritage site that oral tradition links to the transatlantic slave trade. Tano Boase Sacred Grove, near Tanoboase, is a sacred grove and rock shrine tied to the deity Tano and the heritage of the Bono people.

What they share is more than rock. Each is a cave or grove wrapped in living tradition, cared for by communities who treat these places as sacred, historic and worth protecting. Each asks for a respectful visit rather than a quick stop.

They differ in mood and in what they ask of you. Buoyem is the most active outing, with a climb and wildlife. Kunsu is quieter and more reflective, its meaning carried in oral history. Tano Boase brings nature, shrine and Bono heritage together in one place.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan these as a slow day or two rather than a rushed circuit, and remember that Buoyem and Tano Boase sit near Techiman while Kunsu lies further north in Kintampo North Municipality. Arrange transport in advance, as public options between the sites are limited, and expect some walking and scrambling at Buoyem. Before you go, check current access, opening arrangements and guide availability locally, since these are community and sacred sites where visits may depend on the caretakers. Bring water, sturdy shoes and sun protection, and ask before taking photographs. A local guide will deepen the history you hear.
