About Tano Boase Sacred Grove
Tanoboase Sacred Grove and Shrine is a sacred grove and rock shrine near the village of Tanoboase in the Techiman North District of Ghana's Bono East Region. It is regarded as the cradle and traditional home of the Bono people and forms part of Ghana's material cultural heritage. The site is associated with the deity Tano, also referred to as Ta Kora.
The grove is known for sandstone rock formations containing sacred caves and a rock shrine. Its compartments are described as a main entrance, a durbar ground, a hideout, a watchtower and stairs, and an original brass pan is said to be kept inside the rock shrine. The surrounding vegetation is dense semi-deciduous forest close to the Tano River, which is home to protected catfish. Historically the site served as a battleground during the Ashanti Wars and as a hideout during the slave trade and inter-tribal wars.
For visitors, the documented offer is modest and largely guided. Sources describe guided tours available throughout the year, nature trails, and a panoramic overlook at the historical watchtower. Snack food and drinks can be found in Tanoboase village, with hotel and guesthouse accommodation in nearby Techiman. The Daily Graphic reported that the Ghana Tourism Authority was building two reception facilities, then about 90 per cent complete, and planned to expand a car park, summer huts and seating; the same report noted that the site lacked an electricity connection at the time. No restrooms or visitor centre are explicitly confirmed as operating, so facilities should be treated as limited.
The grove became a Community Based-Ecotourism Project in 1996 and was selected as an eco-tourism site in 2001 with support from the Ghana Association for the Conservation of Nature. Fees reported by the grove's managing director were between GH¢40 and GH¢50 per person for foreign tourists and between GH¢3 and GH¢10 per head for Ghanaian tourists. These figures come from a single secondary report and may be out of date; opening hours are not established in the available evidence, so visitors should confirm current fees and access locally before travelling.
