About T.Y. Kente Weaving Enterprise
T.Y. Kente Weaving Enterprise is a medium-scale kente weaving workshop at Agortime Akpokope, also written Akpokofe, a small weaving village near Agotime Kpetoe in the Agotime-Ziope District of Ghana's Volta Region. The enterprise was founded in 1992 and registered in 1998, and it weaves kente cloth on local looms. Its output is broad rather than limited to cloth lengths: mufflers, stoles, shawls, mats, tablecloths, window and door curtains, bedcovers with pillow cases, wall hangings, hats, ties and bowties.
The workshop is run by managing director Mr. Thompson Yao Avornyotse and employs 24 weavers, working under a supervisor. The founder also helped form the Agortime Kpetoe Weavers Association, a body of about 130 handloom textile weavers, and serves as its chairman — which places this enterprise within a wider local weaving trade rather than standing alone.
For a visitor, the interest is the working craft itself: an active weaving enterprise in a village setting, listed as both a craft centre and a community tourism stop. Buyers for its products come from Ghana, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Benin, Mali, Burkina Faso and Togo, as well as Ghanaian commission agents in Europe, and goods are shipped from Tema Port or by air from Accra. The director has taken part in international weaving and trade events, including African Traditional Weavers Events in Paris in 1999 and AGOA-related trade missions in the United States in 2003–2004.
The setting is Agotime Kpetoe, the district capital, close to the Ghana–Togo border and along the Ho–Aflao road. The enterprise's published address is House No. AK/D/191, P.O. Box 32, Akpokofe via Kpetoe, Volta Region. Note that older directory listings describe the area as "Ho District"; Agotime-Ziope District was created in 2012 when the former Adaklu-Anyigbe District was split, with Agotime Kpetoe as its capital.
Practical planning is limited by what is published. Contact numbers appear as (233) 20 817 56 07 and (233) 24 473 92 40, with an email reachable through a directory contact form rather than a plain address. No coordinates, opening hours, admission fees or tour arrangements are published in the available sources, so visitors should confirm access and timing directly before travelling.
