About Sayu Cave and Mogo Hill
Sayu Cave and Mogo Hill are two named features inside Shai Hills Resource Reserve, a protected area at Doryumu in the Shai-Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region, managed by the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission of Ghana. The reserve lies a short drive east of Accra on the route towards Akosombo, and visitor accounts put it roughly an hour from the city outside peak traffic.
The Forestry Commission lists "Sayou" among the reserve's spectacular caves, alongside Hieowayo, Manya and Adwuku, and states that these caves were the abode of the Shai people from the late Stone Age until they were dislocated by the British colonial Army in 1892. Reporting a June 2024 guided hike with Kwame Asamoah-Boateng Oppong, Assistant Manager at the reserve's Tourism and Public Relations unit, Graphic Online describes Sayu Cave as having a trail of roughly 200 metres and sitting about 120 metres above sea level, with three chambers: the first holding stone terraces used offensively and defensively, the second serving as the chief's palace or court, and the third as his living quarters and wartime hideout. The same account says the cave was the palace of the Ancestral Tribal Chief of the Shai people, is regarded as the abode of ancestors where rituals are performed, especially during the Ngmayem festival, and that the people of Kordiabe trace their ancestry to it.
Mogo Hill is described in the same article as about 60 metres above sea level and as the place where training for the Dipo rites for young girls was performed; the Dipo remains a coming-of-age ceremony for Shai girls. A visitor account describes a rough, rocky path to the hill using ropes on steep rocks, passing grinding areas and puberty-rite sites, with views over the reserve and Accra, followed by the walk to Sayu Cave — climbing over large rocks and using a ladder and ropes for about 30 minutes through a dark, damp cave with a section used as a palace. Another visitor reports a 360-degree view from the Mogo Hill summit over the camp and the Krobo Hills.
The reserve covers about 51 square kilometres of coastal savanna and hills and hosts kob, green monkey, spot-nose monkey, olive baboon, antelopes, zebras and ostriches, with bats in the caves. Facilities such as a museum, animal farm, eco-bar, picnic sites, campsites and glamping are described at the reserve's visitor centre and camp area rather than at the cave or hill themselves; no amenities are published for the two sites, and one visitor account notes there is no restaurant on site and advises bringing meals. The Forestry Commission publishes switchboard numbers, and the reserve lists a park manager contact.
