About Nkrumah Museum at Nkroful

The Nkrumah Museum at Nkroful is a museum and mausoleum/memorial in Nkroful, the village where Ghana's first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was born. It is also known as the Kwame Nkrumah Museum at Nkroful and the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum at Nkroful. The site is a cultural and heritage landmark, and it is listed among the attractions of the Nzema area.

Its significance rests on a specific sequence of events. Nkrumah was first buried in Guinea Conakry. He was then buried at Nkroful on 9 July 1972, at the original mausoleum and monument. In 1992 his remains were laid to rest at the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum in Accra. What remains at Nkroful is the original burial site and memorial, which is why the two mausoleums are distinct places rather than duplicates.

Nkroful is an inland village in the Western Region, about 5 km from the coastal highway at the Essiama town junction turnoff, near Axim. It is the administrative capital of Ellembelle District, a district carved out of the then Nzema East District in December 2007 by LI 1918 and inaugurated in February 2008.

The museum and mausoleum have been renovated and refurbished. The Nvavile family of Nkrumah has described the site as transformed into a state-of-the-art tourist destination through the efforts of the Member of Parliament for Ellembelle. The MP also champions the Nkrumah Festival (NkrumahFest) at Nkroful each 21 September, Nkrumah's birthday.

Access is straightforward by road. By private vehicle from Takoradi, drive west toward Elubo; after roughly 1.5 hours you reach Esiama, turn right and continue about 4 km to the Nkroful town centre. By public transport, take a bus or minibus from Takoradi's main lorry station toward Elubo, alight at Esiama, then take a taxi or tro-tro to Nkroful.
