About Makola Market

Makola Market is the market place and shopping district at the centre of Accra, Ghana's capital, and the city's largest and most famous open-air market. Constructed in 1924, it has served as Accra's main wholesale and retail marketplace and stands among the country's most important social and cultural institutions. It sits in Accra's Central Business District, on Kojo Thompson Road in Accra Central, within the Accra Metropolitan Area of the Greater Accra Region. The Accra Metropolitan Assembly describes it as an iconic market and a cultural-heritage asset.

The market has been dominated by women traders since its founding. Historically, women of Accra's indigenous Ga ethnic group, trading since the sixteenth century, made Makola thrive; today it is a diverse market with women from across Ghana. It was demolished on 18 August 1979 under the Rawlings government, which blamed market women for Ghana's economic problems. Trading resumed and the market has since become a thriving commercial hub. It also featured in Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations Ghana episode.

Goods sold include fresh produce, imported and manufactured foods, textiles and wax prints, kente, clothing, footwear, jewellery made from locally handcrafted beads, medicines, tools, pots and pans, school materials, car parts and land snails. The market is structured but maze-like, with stalls, kiosks, tabletop shops and open-air areas divided by product type, and tailors sew garments to measure on site.

There is no admission fee: Makola is a public trading space open to everyone, with no ticket requirement to enter. Guided walking tours are sold separately by third-party operators. Access is by taxi, tro-tro (shared minibus), ride-hailing or on foot from central Accra; there is no official parking area for private vehicles, and parking nearby is limited and difficult at peak times. The market is not wheelchair accessible — narrow lanes, uneven ground and dense crowds make it impractical, and no official accessibility provision was found. The coordinates used here mark the market area, not a verified visitor entrance.
