About Kpetoe Kente Weaving Centre

Kpetoe Kente Weaving Centre sits in Kpetoe (also written Agortime-Kpetoe), the capital of Agortime-Ziope District in the Volta Region, close to Ghana's border with Togo. The town has produced kente cloth for generations and is known for Ewe kente that is distinctive in design and often less expensive than cloth from other regions. The weaving centre itself is a roofed, open-air building where up to 25 weavers work and display what they make.

Because the centre is a working place rather than a staged attraction, what you see depends on who is at the looms. Roughly half of the weavers speak English, but all are described as willing to show their work and negotiate a sale price. Cloth is also sold in village stores, among them Israel Trading Inc. on the main road and Bowman Kente Weaving and Desiadenyo Kente Store off the main street, with kente strips, joined strips, table runners, hats, accessories and clothing on offer. The adjacent village of Abenyinase is described as having up to 100 weavers working and selling cloth outdoors.

Kpetoe lies along the main road between Ho and Aflao, with frequent public transport between Ho and the coast. It is roughly 22–25 km east or south-east of Ho, the regional capital, on the Ho–Aflao Highway near the Togo border. The town is also a centre of cross-border trade, and the Agortime Traditional Area holds a week-long kente festival, Agbamevo Za (Agbamevorza), each August, with speed-weaving contests and kente dress design competitions. The late Konor (Paramount Chief) Nene Nuer Keteku, who reigned for 58 years, is credited with instituting the annual festival and received UNESCO's Custodian of Ewe Kente Cloth Award.

Practical facilities are limited. There are no official opening hours; weavers are generally active from dawn to dusk, Monday to Saturday, and generally do not work on Sundays. The centre has pit toilets but no running water, and additional amenities are said to be in the planning stages. Cold beverages are available in the village, and chop bars offer street food. Wikivoyage notes that Kpetoe, UNESCO, the NCRC and the US Peace Corps were working on building a visitor centre to welcome tourists.
