About Fort Good Hope

Fort Good Hope, known in Dutch as Fort de Goede Hoop, is a historic coastal fort at Senya Beraku in the Awutu Senya District of Ghana's Central Region. It stands on a promontory near a cove, looking out over a beach lined with coconut palms. The Dutch established a trading presence here in the 1660s and later built a small triangular fort with three bastions and a curtain wall, hoping to draw gold, ivory and enslaved people from the hinterland Akyem kingdom. The expected gold trade never materialised, while the trade in enslaved people grew as wars among Asante, Akyem and Akwamu produced large numbers of prisoners of war.

By 1715 the structure was too small, and it was rebuilt in the rectangular form seen today, with four bastions and curtain walls. A large male slave prison occupied the southwest bastion, with a separate female slave prison. Around a central courtyard were ranged apartments, a hall for officers and the garrison, stores, kitchens, a granary and a powder magazine. An outer defensive wall added later has largely disappeared. An 1804 official report described the fort as one of the finest and most spacious on the coast, and it was the last fort built on the Gold Coast. Britain captured it in 1782 during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War, held it until 1785, and gained it permanently in the 1868 exchange of forts; it later fell into disuse.

Restored in the 1980s, the fort now serves as a rest house and small bed-and-breakfast as well as a visitor attraction. Guided tours cover its rooms and dungeons, and the site offers views over the sea and surrounding landscape. It is owned by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage serial listing "Forts and Castles, Volta, Greater Accra, Central and Western Regions," inscribed in 1979. It is also listed as a National Monument under the National Monuments Instrument, EI 42, 1972.

Practical details are only partly documented. The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board states opening hours of 9:00am to 4:30pm, though the days of opening are not specified and the hours are unverified beyond that page. Entrance arrangements are disputed: a GMMB schedule indicates a fee, while secondary sources describe free entry with tips appreciated for caretakers. No site-specific telephone, email or on-site contact for the fort itself was found; enquiries go through the GMMB office at 2 Barnes Road, Adabraka, Accra. Accessibility information is unknown. Founding dates are also disputed: GMMB's page title gives 1705 while its text says 1715, and other sources give 1667 for the lodge or original establishment.
