About Fort Fredensborg
Fort Fredensborg is a Danish-Norwegian colonial fort at Old Ningo, also called Great Ningo, a coastal town in the Ningo-Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region, Ghana. It stands on the Gulf of Guinea coast. The fort was built in 1734 and served as a fairly important slave trading station within the Danish Gold Coast.
After the abolition of the slave trade the station decayed. By 1835 only one man was stationed there "to maintain the flag", and the fort was already in a state of ruin when it was handed over to the British on 8 March 1850 along with other Danish possessions.
Today the site is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List (1979) as part of the serial property "Forts and Castles, Volta, Greater Accra, Central and Western Regions". UNESCO's 2019 State of Conservation report classifies Fredensborg at Old Ningo among the serial property's "ruins with visible structures". Custody rests with the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB).
For a visitor, the interest lies in that combination: a documented Danish slave-trading station, a long period of decline, and a surviving ruin on the open coast. Visitor accounts describe exploring the remaining ruins along the shore, with cannon remains and views of the Gulf of Guinea, and characterise the site as quiet and less visited.
Practical planning should be treated cautiously. The GMMB lists its own Accra office contacts — 2 Barnes Road, Adabraka, Accra; telephone +233-302 221633 / 221635; fax +233-302 222401; email [email protected] — but no site-specific contact for Old Ningo is recorded. The available coordinates (5.74464, 0.18333) are feature coordinates for the fort, not a verified visitor entrance. Opening hours, entry fees, guided tours, facilities and current site condition are not established by the sources consulted, so visitors should confirm arrangements with the GMMB before travelling.
