About Blekusu Lagoon

Blekusu Lagoon is a coastal lagoon at Blekusu, a settlement in the Ketu South Municipal District of the Volta Region, Ghana. According to Ghana's Ministry of Food and Agriculture district profile and the Ketu South Municipal Assembly, roughly 30 kilometres of lagoon and wetland extend from the Keta Lagoon at Blekusu towards the environs of Aflao. That stretch is described in official district documents as offering opportunity for aquaculture, eco-tourism, the development of a green belt, and salt mining.

The lagoon sits within a low-lying coastal landscape. District profiles place altitudes at under 15 metres along the coast, rising to about 66 metres further inland. The coastline here is fairly smooth and marked by sandbars, and drainage runs southward, dominated by seasonal streams rather than large rivers.

Blekusu Lagoon forms part of the wider Keta Lagoon Complex Ramsar Site, described as Ghana's largest Ramsar wetland, which stretches along the south-eastern coast near the border with Togo. For a visitor, that context is the main point of interest: this is a wetland of national and international conservation standing rather than a developed leisure site.

Official sources also record that these lagoons occasionally flood, causing destruction of property and displacing inhabitants. Reporting has covered coastal flooding and sea-level rise affecting Blekusu residents, and the nearby Blekusu Coastal Protection (sea defence) project has been under construction in phases. Visitors should therefore treat the shoreline as a working, changeable environment.

Practical information is limited. The available evidence does not confirm opening hours, entrance fees, guided tours, viewing points, boat access, or visitor facilities, and no verified coordinates for the lagoon feature were obtained. Access details, current site conditions, and any local guidance should be confirmed with the Ketu South Municipal Assembly before travelling.
