About Assin Manso Ancestral Slave River Park
Assin Manso Ancestral Slave River Park, also known as Donkor Nsuo or Nnonkonsuo — "the slave river" — is a heritage site in Assin Manso in Ghana's Central Region. It sits about 40 km along the Cape Coast–Kumasi highway, reached from the Yamransa junction. The site is documented as one of the largest slave markets and as a final link in the slavery route that ran from northern Ghana toward the coast.
According to the district assembly and the national tourism board, this is where captured Africans rested and took their last bath on African soil before being marched to the coastal slave castles at Elmina and Cape Coast. That "last bath" in the river is the reason the place is remembered, and it is the element most visitors come to understand.
The park holds several distinct features. The Slave River itself, Donkor Nsuo, is the waterway at the centre of the site. The Ancestral Graveyard is where the returned remains of two people from the diaspora — Lady Crystal from Jamaica and Carson from New York — were re-buried in 1998. The Memorial Wall of Return is where visitors write their names. Emancipation Day ceremonies are held here annually on 1 August. Visitors typically remove their shoes and walk barefoot to the river through a bamboo grove.
The site's profile grew through the Ghana Tourism Authority's Year of Return campaign, which drew diaspora visitors seeking to trace ancestral routes.
Practical planning is limited by what is officially published. No official gate or entrance fee appears on the Visit Ghana page or the district assembly page. Ghana Tourism Marketplace lists a bookable "Assin Manso Ancestral River Site" tour from ₵15.00 per person, described as six hours, maximum 100 people, minimum age 18, hosted by a GTDC Verified vendor; that is a tour listing price, not a confirmed gate fee. Opening hours are not established in the available sources, so confirm details locally before travelling.
