About Albert Bosomtwi Sam Fishing Harbour
The Albert Bosomtwi-Sam Fishing Harbour is a working fishing harbour in Sekondi, in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Area of Ghana's Western Region. It is operated by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), which manages it as part of Takoradi Port, and it is named after the late Hon. Albert Bosomtwi-Sam, in whose Sekondi constituency it was built. Before the name change it was known as the Sekondi Fishing Port.
GPHA describes the harbour as made up of three parts: the Inner Fishing Harbour, the Outer Fishing Harbour and the Canoe Basin. The Canoe Basin is a traditional fish landing beach and a toll-free area managed by GPHA, where Chief Fishermen control day-to-day activities and artisanal fishermen operate. Landings there peak between June and September, with herrings as the main catch.
Adjacent to the operational area is a commercial zone on leased land given over to fish-related activity. It includes a fish market selling fresh and frozen fish to the public, cold storage facilities, commercial banks, warehouses and ship stores, shops selling fish gears and parts, and a fish processing factory. The harbour's 2016 expansion added an ice-making plant producing 15 tonnes of ice per day and an additional administration office complex.
For a visitor, the harbour's interest lies in watching a functioning landing and market economy rather than a staged attraction. It appears on at least one commercial Sekondi-Takoradi city tour itinerary, which suggests it is viewed from outside as a stop on a wider port-city route. Practical details are limited: no opening hours, entry fees, guided-visit arrangements or visitor amenities are documented in the available sources, and the published coordinates mark the harbour feature rather than a visitor entrance. Travellers should treat access as unconfirmed and plan around the fact that this is an active industrial and fishing site.
