Adidome Market

Adidome Market is one of the major markets of the Central Tongu District in Ghana's Volta Region, and it sits in Adidome, the district's administrative capital. The Central Tongu District Assembly's 2025–2028 Composite Budget lists five major markets in the district — Adidome, Mafi-Kumase, Mafi-Aflavenu, Dove and Avedo — placing Adidome Market among the district's principal trading places.

It is a periodic market rather than a daily one. Trading takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays, and no daily opening or closing times are published. Visitors planning around the market should therefore treat those two days as the market days and expect activity to be concentrated there.

The commodities traded are largely local farm produce: gari, cassava, beans and other foodstuffs. The district is particularly known for high-quality gari, so the market is a place where that staple is central to trade. Adidome Market functions as a commercial hub within the Tongu enclave, drawing traders and buyers from surrounding communities such as Sokpoe, Mafi-Kumase and Aveyime.

Adidome lies in the southwest of the Volta Region. The district borders South Tongu to the south, Ada East District in the Greater Accra Region to the west, Akatsi South District to the east, and North Tongu and Adaklu Districts to the north. Feeder roads connect farming areas to market centres at Adidome and Mafi-Kumase, and the district can be reached via the Volta River using small boats. The district assembly's published coordinates, roughly 6.0740722 N, 0.4997917 E, describe the district feature rather than the market entrance.

Facilities at the market are only partially documented and are reported as inadequate. Market sheds exist but some leak, and drainage and sanitation are described as insufficient; traders have reported flooding when it rains and a lack of toilet facilities, and there are no streetlights in or around the market. In October 2025 traders publicly appealed to the District Assembly for fencing, modern sheds, a drainage system, toilet facilities and streetlights. That same month the Volta Regional Minister announced plans to rehabilitate the market with additional sheds, a hygienic washroom facility and an improved drainage system. Visitors should expect basic, working-market conditions and check current arrangements locally before travelling.
