Why visit

About Aboadze Thermal Power Station (VRA) visitor site

The Aboadze Thermal Power Station, also known as the Takoradi Thermal Power Station, stands at Aboadze in the Shama District of Ghana's Western Region, roughly 17 km east of Sekondi-Takoradi. It is Ghana's first fossil-fuel power station operated by the Volta River Authority (VRA). The plant became operational in 1997 and was officially inaugurated on 15 October 2000.

The site comprises three power plants. T1 is a 330 MW combined-cycle plant fuelled primarily by light crude oil, with distillate fuel oil for start-up and natural gas as an alternative. T2, rated at 220 MW, is owned and operated by Takoradi International Company (TICO), a joint venture between VRA and TAQA. T3 is a 132 MW combined-cycle plant.

For visitors, the interest here is educational rather than scenic. The Shama District Assembly's budget documents describe the VRA thermal plant at Aboadze as a site that attracts students and tourists to study the supply of electricity, and note that VRA has hosted organised facility visits for journalists and dignitaries to study thermal generation. The same district documents record that VRA operates a club house at Aboadze, open to the general public, with a swimming pool and other recreational facilities. A MIGA environmental review describes the wider power station complex, about 168 ha in extent, as including a 72 ha township with recreational facilities.

What a visitor can reasonably expect is therefore a working industrial power enclave with a recreational and social component nearby, rather than a conventional tourist attraction. The setting is coastal and industrial, immediately west of the village of Aboadze.

Practical planning details are limited. The sources do not document visitor access arrangements, opening hours, guided tour schedules, fees, or contact procedures for the power station itself, and the published coordinates are feature coordinates for the plant rather than a visitor entrance. Anyone hoping to arrange a study visit should treat access as unconfirmed and seek information directly from VRA or the Shama District Assembly before travelling.
