Ejisu sits in the Ashanti Region close to Kumasi, and it rewards travellers who want to understand Asante history rather than simply pass through it. Three places here tell that story from different angles. The Asante Traditional Buildings are a UNESCO World Heritage Site made up of ten surviving Asante shrine houses in villages near Kumasi, decorated with bas-relief and Adinkra-linked designs. One of those ten is the Besease Traditional Building, also known as the Yaw Tano Shrine, which stands in Ejisu itself. The Yaa Asantewaa Museum, also in Ejisu, honours Yaa Asantewaa, Queen Mother of Ejisu and leader of Ashanti resistance in the 1900–1901 War of the Golden Stool.

What links them is heritage: all three are cultural and historical sites rooted in Asante tradition, and the shrine houses share a single World Heritage listing. What differs is scale and focus. The Asante Traditional Buildings are a wider property spread across several villages, while Besease is one specific shrine you can visit on its own. The museum, by contrast, is a modern tribute to a single remarkable leader rather than a surviving historic structure. Together they make a thoughtful half-day or full-day of looking and learning.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan your visit around these three sites rather than trying to see everything at once, and allow time to travel between the villages of the wider World Heritage property and Ejisu town. Ask locally about the best order to visit, since the shrine houses are in different villages near Kumasi. Before setting out, check current opening arrangements and whether a guide is available, as these are active cultural and heritage sites rather than ordinary attractions. Dress respectfully, follow any guidance on photography, and remember that some places are shrines first and visitor sites second.
