Things to do in Bono Region

The Bono Region rewards travellers who like their history close to the surface. Three of the places gathered here sit around Wenchi, and together they trace a long arc of Ghanaian life: the Dr. K.A. Busia Mausoleum in Wenchi, the walled burial place and memorial of Professor Kofi Abrefa Busia, Prime Minister of Ghana's Second Republic; the Wurobo Ancestral Caves in Wenchi Municipal, described by official sources as the ancestral dwelling place of the people of Nchiraa; and Wenchi New Market, the town's main marketplace, known for its weekly Thursday market day and a 24-Hour Economy Model Market under construction.

A short distance away, near Hani, the Hani Archaeological Site preserves the remains of Begho, a medieval trading town occupied from the 11th to the early 19th century, with history, heritage, museum and cultural interest.

What they share is a sense of continuity, of places still used and remembered rather than simply displayed. What differs is the mood: quiet reflection at the mausoleum, rock and memory at the caves, the noise and colour of market day, and the long view of a trading town at Begho.

Good to know

Before you go

Wenchi makes a sensible base, since three of these places lie in or near the town, while Hani and Begho sit further out. Plan market day around the weekly Thursday market at Wenchi New Market, and allow unhurried time at the mausoleum and the caves, which are places of remembrance and heritage rather than busy attractions. Before setting out, check locally on access, opening arrangements and whether a guide is needed at the archaeological site, and confirm road conditions for the Hani area. Carry water, wear sturdy shoes for cave and site walking, and ask before photographing people or ceremonies.
