About Dr. K.A. Busia Mausoleum
The Dr. K.A. Busia Mausoleum in Wenchi, in Ghana's Bono Region, is the burial place and memorial of Professor Kofi Abrefa Busia (11 July 1913 – 28 August 1978), Prime Minister of Ghana's Second Republic and the country's first university professor. Busia was born in Wenchi and died in Oxford, England.
The tomb stands within a large walled compound on a hill, about 400 metres from the centre of Wenchi town, off the Wenchi-Akrobi road, which is also given as the Wenchi-Nsawkaw road. The grave lies between two-storey buildings that once served as Busia's private residence and offices. The tombstone is inscribed "Kofi Abrefa Busia, 11 July 1913-28 August 1978. Prime Minister of the Second Republic of Ghana", together with the scripture Philippians 2:16. A bust of Busia is erected in his memory, and the grave area is decorated with ornamental trees.
A library block built by former President John Agyekum Kufuor to house Busia's books, artefacts and personal items stands at the site. The Bono Regional Coordinating Council and Goldstar Air state that the mausoleum displays artefacts and personal items used by Dr. Busia.
For a visitor, the site is a place of national memory rather than a developed attraction. Reporting by the Ghana News Agency in March 2024 and by the Daily Graphic in 2019 described the compound and library as overgrown with weeds and the buildings as deteriorating, with roof leaks; residents have called on government to rehabilitate the site. No visitor amenities such as toilets, a shop, parking or guided-tour facilities are documented, so anyone planning a visit should expect a simple, largely unmanaged compound and make their own arrangements.
A separate 12-foot statue of Busia stands beneath a four-post arch at Sunyani Jubilee Park; it is a different monument and not part of the Wenchi site.
