Things to do in Atibie

Atibie, in the Kwahu South District of Ghana's Eastern Region, is a small town with two very different claims on your attention: a chief's palace steeped in oral history, and a mountain that has become the country's home of paragliding. Both sit within the same community, so a single visit can take in the story of how the town was founded and the wide views that draw flyers and spectators from far beyond Kwahu.

The Atibie Palace, the traditional palace of the Atibiehene, is the recorded setting for the chief's oral history of the town's founding. It is a place for listening and learning, where the past is told rather than displayed. Mount Odweanoma, by contrast, is all open air and altitude. It is Ghana's main paragliding take-off point and the host of the annual Kwahu Easter Paragliding Festival, and the Odweanoma Mountain Paragliding Site overlooks Nkawkaw from the ridge.

So the appeal here is a pairing: one site rooted in memory and tradition, the other in wind, height and festival energy. Come for the history, stay for the view, and if your timing is right, watch the sky fill with wings.

Good to know

Before you go

Atibie is reached via Kwahu in the Eastern Region, with Nkawkaw as the nearest town below the ridge. Plan around the Easter period if you want to see the Kwahu Easter Paragliding Festival, when Odweanoma Mountain is at its busiest; at other times the take-off point is quieter and the views are the main draw. Allow time for both the palace and the mountain rather than rushing between them, and treat the palace as a cultural site where you should ask before taking photographs. Before you travel, check locally whether the paragliding site is operating and whether the palace is receiving visitors, as both can be affected by events and by the chief's schedule.
