About White Volta River boat tours at Daboya

Boat tours on the White Volta River run beside Daboya, the capital of North Gonja District in Ghana's Savannah Region. The river here is wide, with fishing canoes and birds on the water, and the trips are made in hand-made boats paddled by villagers rather than motorised craft.

A tour is built around what happens on and along the river. Visitors can watch for the area's birdlife, see a fishing demonstration using a hand-thrown net, and visit a beach where salt is harvested. Daboya itself is an ancient Gonja town historically known for extracting salt from saline soils along the White Volta, and for fugu (smock) weaving, so the river trip sits alongside a longer local story of salt and cloth.

Getting there takes some planning. Daboya is reached by a 25 km feeder road that leaves the Tamale–Buipe highway at Busunu junction; the surface is unpaved after Busunu and rough in the rainy season, and a 4WD is recommended. There is no direct tro-tro to Daboya — the usual approach is a shared taxi to Busunu junction, then a taxi or motorbike onward. The nearest airport is Tamale (TML).

In town, facilities are basic: a small daily market, simple chop bars and tea spots, and a basic district guesthouse. There is no Wi-Fi, power outages are frequent, and MTN is the only reliable mobile network.

One safety point is stated plainly in travel guidance: do not swim in the White Volta, because of strong currents and bilharzia risk. Treat the river as something to be seen from a boat, not entered.
