About Wechiau Ancient Mosque
The Wechiau Ancient Mosque, also called the Wechiau earthen mosque, is a historic mud-brick mosque in Wechiau village, in the Wa West District of Ghana's Upper West Region. It is described as combining Sudano-Sahelian and Djenne architectural styles, with features comparable to the better-known Larabanga Mosque. It formerly had Sudanic-style buttresses; today only one tower remains, and the interior is formed of small, spaced columns supporting a flat mud roof.
The mosque belongs to a wider family of old mosques across northern Ghana. Research on this heritage describes them as products of long-distance trade networks, built of sun-dried earth bricks with earthen flat roofs carried on earthen pillars and wooden poles, and sited along old trade routes. Because they are made of earth, they depend on routine maintenance to survive. Wechiau is counted among ten surviving mosques of this kind, and among those targeted for restoration; it and Dondoli were noted as being in a distressed condition linked to climate change.
Dating is not fully settled in the sources. An academic paper states the mosque was built in the 18th century and was abandoned in the 1990s. A 2018 photo caption describes it as then in ruins, its roof having been replaced with zinc before it fell out of use after a newer, larger mosque was built just behind it, and notes that unused mosques are traditionally left to the elements rather than demolished. Restoration work began in early 2024 under UNESCO guidelines with community participation, and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board has reported that major parts of that work were completed.
For a visitor, this is a heritage site rather than a developed attraction. Expect an earthen mosque in a village setting, with the newer mosque nearby, and expect the fabric of the building to reflect an ongoing restoration rather than a finished monument. The coordinates given here are feature coordinates for the mosque, not a confirmed visitor entrance, and the mapped listing places it at Liman yiri, Wechiau. No opening hours, entry fees, guided-tour arrangements, or facilities are documented in the available sources, so these should be confirmed locally before travelling. Wechiau is reached via Wa West District in the Upper West Region.
